How to Play

Overview

Qatari Cards is a team-based trick-taking card game. Players bid on how many tricks they can win, choose a trump suit, then play to meet their bid. The team that reaches 32 penalty points first loses.

Game Flow

Dealing — Each player receives 8 cards. One card in the deck is the Wild Card — the most powerful card in the game.

Bidding (Mazaad) — Starting after the dealer, players bid from 5 to 8 on how many tricks their team will win. You can pass or raise. If everyone passes, the Wild Card holder must bid 5.

Trump Selection — The highest bidder (declarer) picks the trump suit. Trump cards beat all non-trump cards.

Playing Tricks — Players take turns playing one card each. You must follow the led suit if you can. If you can't, you may play trump or any other card. Highest card of the led suit wins, unless trumped.

Scoring — If the bidding team wins at least as many tricks as they bid, the defending team gets penalty points. If not, the bidding team gets penalties. First team to 32 points loses.

Key Rules

The Wild Card

The Wild Card beats every card in the game, always winning the trick it's played in. But you can't lead with the Wild Card unless it's your only remaining card.

Wild Card Endgame

If you're forced to lead the final trick with the Wild Card as your only card, your team immediately loses the round. Plan carefully.

Forced Wild Card Bid

If all players pass during bidding, the player holding the Wild Card must bid the minimum (5). You can't avoid playing.

Card Ranking

From lowest to highest: 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace (4-player). Trump suit outranks all other suits.

Follow Suit

You must play a card of the led suit if you have one. If you can't follow suit, you're free to play trump or any card.

Kappoot (Bid 8)

The maximum bid. If you bid Kappoot and win all 8 tricks, the penalty is devastating for the other team. If you fail, it's devastating for yours.

Strategy Tips

Bid conservatively — Unless you have strong trump cards and the Wild Card, keep your bids modest.

Track played cards — Pay attention to what's been played. Knowing which high cards are gone changes everything.

Protect your Wild Card — Don't waste the Wild Card early. Use it to win critical tricks or avoid the endgame penalty.

Coordinate with your partner — In multiplayer, teamwork wins games. Set up tricks for your partner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players can play?

4 or 6 players. You can play solo against AI bots or with up to 5 other people on nearby devices.

Can I play alone?

Yes. Single-player mode lets you play against intelligent AI opponents that bid strategically and play competitively.

Do I need internet for multiplayer?

No. Local multiplayer uses peer-to-peer connectivity over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth between nearby devices.

I've never played Qatari Cards before. Is there a tutorial?

The full rules are on this page above. It's a trick-taking team game with bidding and trump — similar to Spades or Hearts if you've played those. The app guides you through the key phases as you play.

What does the Wild Card card do?

The Wild Card beats every other card in the game. But there's a catch: if you're forced to lead the final trick with the Wild Card as your only card, your team loses the round immediately. It's powerful but risky.
